For those visitors who are content to admire the views of Corvo island from the base of the Vila do Corvo church staircase and from the church itself there is a funicular to the top or a steep twisting road to drive up. On the terrace around the church there are two B&B’s and a tea shop, and dramatic views over the surrounding countryside. The statues of historical figures that are arranged around the terrace are attractively stately and though there are many visitors the atmosphere remains that of a national shrine rather than that of a world-renowned tourist venue.

The main doorway of the church is flanked by statues of Josiah and Jeremiah, and is richly decorated. The interior, too, in a neo-Classical style somewhat unusual for the area, is well proportioned, though with too great and unnecessary prominence given to the central pillars The altarpiece is quite extraordinary with its life-size representation of the scene at Calvary including the family of Jesus, Roman soldiers and sixteen figures in all.

The strangest sight in the church, however, is the preservation and display of a figure that is claimed to be the mortal remains of St Clement. The pinched, drawn figure, its skin tightly drawn across its bones, is bizarrely dressed in light blue and white cap and knickerbockers. On some of the side altars pilgrims leave votive offerings, affliction for which intercession is sought. Pictures and photographs of loved ones for whom prayers are sought are also left.

In rather lighter mood there is a pleasant walk in the woods behind the church and, hidden amongst the trees, surprisingly, there is a boating lake and tennis courts.

There is a nominal entrance fee but in return one receives a small map and guide to the settlement. Most of the smaller items have been removed to the Martins Sarmento Museum in Angra, but the scale of the site is in itself surprising and intriguing.

A lot of people are looking for the perfect getaway, a place where they can enjoy the company of people when they want to and hibernate themselves when they need to. Because of this, low lying mountainous regions that are near tourist spots such as beaches are becoming more and more famous worldwide basically because you can have your fill of socialization at the beach and relax your body and soul by yourself atop a mountain. This is exactly what Guardamar del Segura, Spain has to offer.

Guardemar is to be found to the south of Elche and Alicante City. This Mediterranean seaside resort town has everything to offer for the tourist. There are several miles of pristine sandy beaches which are carefully manicured every morning. You will also find a town which is bustling with nightlife, shops, and a wide variety of market stalls on Wednesday.

It is one of those perfectly positioned towns that will allow you to relax on the fine stretches of beautiful Mediterranean beach or tour into the mountains of the Costa Blanca in search of hidden gems. One of those hidden gems is Beniarda Located between the reservoir of Guadelest Castle and Serrella sierra, Beniarda is one of the many mountain villages of Alicante, Spain. This small village is inhabited by less than five hundred people with the main industry being agriculture. Their main products include olives and various fruits which they export worldwide.

Just like most of the towns and villages in Alicante, Spain, this mountain village traces its roots to Moorish occupation, although exact records of year and dates have not been established. Evidence of Islamic occupation can be traced to the architecture found in the village most especially in the houses of Calle de la Torre. Soon thereafter, Catholics have invaded the village as evidenced by a 16th century church of St. Joan Bautista. Two separate architectures can also be witnessed in this village – the Font Vella and Font de la Mesquita.

Because Beniarda is located in the mountainous regions of Alicante, it is uncommon for travelers to stay in this area. However, the retreat and isolation it gives to the weary tourist makes it more and more common for people to visit it for an entire day. There are also nearby attractions to this village for people who are looking for a taste of adventure.

Other towns in the vicinity also offer modern facilities such as sports centers, water parks and high end accommodations.

The location of the village makes the weather cooler than most low lying towns in Alicante, Spain. You will experience a little bit of chill during mornings and evenings but the sun shining brightly makes it temperate during afternoon.

Accommodations might come hard in Beniarda mainly because the village is not really a tourist destination per se. It would be best to look for accommodations in nearby towns and villages and visit the village for a day trip just to enjoy the relaxing outdoors of the mountains. All in all, this village is perfect for people who are seeking refuge from the toxic life in the city and those who do not need modern facilities and constant communication to the outside world. Definitely, this village will give your soul a much needed facelift and will let you ponder on life and its complexities.

So, if you plan on visiting the province of Alicante for your vacation, whether that be to the seaside town of Guardamar or the quiet mountain village of Beniarda, you will find it hard not to find plenty of fantastic things to do and see, making this one of the premier destinations of Spain and Europe.

Ang Thong National Marine Park is a less well known tourist destination in the Gulf of Thailand. It is easily reached from either Koh Samui or Koh Phangan by speed boat or tour group boat. For anyone interested in spectacular scenery, snorkeling, diving and exploring caves Ang Thong Marine Park is a must.

The park consists of 42 islets that cover about 250 sq kilometers. The islands are the peaks of a limestone mountain range. The islands are covered with lush forest and have karsts, caves and lots of odd rock formations. Many of the islands are named after their shape such as ‘Sleeping Cow Island’ and ‘3 Pillars Island’. It is wonderful to cruise around the small islands admiring all the strange and wonderful shapes.

On Koh Mae Ko there is a large lake with amazing turquoise colored water. Seeing the lake is one of the highlights of a trip to the area. Around the lake there is a golden basin ‘angthong’ that gives the area its name.

The park headquarters is on the biggest island, Koh Wua Talab. Nearby is a camp site. There are also a couple of treks to viewing points that are well worth taking. The only other inhabited island is Koh Paluay where sea gypsies still pursue their traditional way of life.

The park is scattered in hidden coves and beautiful beaches. In land there is a wealth of wildlife to try and spot. Park rangers conduct tours to try and see macaques, dusky langurs and sea otters. There are also over 40 types of tropical bird to spot.

As you would imagine, the waters around the islands are teaming with marine life. The best diving and snorkeling spot is around Koh Sam Sao. It is one of the few places in the Gulf where you can see dolphins.

Entrance to the Ang Thong National Marine Park is 200 Thai Baht. To get on a tour group to the island costs about 1,500 THB. If you can arrange transport it is possible to stay in the park overnight. If you have your own yacht there are few better places to moor.

San Francisco makes a great stop on a trip. A melting pot of many different cultures with a large dashing of liberal ideals thrown in, San Francisco is both an interesting and exciting city to visit. When here you will want to include a trip the famous Golden Gate bridge, China town, Little Italy and of course not forgetting Alcatraz (the most popular tourist attraction in the area). Make sure you also fully explore the alternative side of the city which has strong roots with the hippy and beatnik movement of the 1960’s. In and around the Haight-Ashbury street you’ll find lots of very cool hotels San Francisco and unique hotels San Francisco to stay in. Here are three of the very best:-

Hotel Tomo – Located in nearby Japan town, this hotel pays homage to all things cool and geeky. In all of the rooms you’ll find comics, cute manga toys and lots of up-to-date technology. In a fun communal room you’ll also find a super-sized movie screen and game consoles such as a Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

Hotel Bijou – This is definitely a place for the movie lovers. If you’re looking for a quirky, themed hotel that won’t break the bank then consider staying at the Bijou. With a classic movie theme running throughout the hotel you’ll find lots of theatre style décor, rooms named after legendary films and even a cinema in the downstairs lobby. It’s free to get in and you’ll find lots of great San Francisco set films played here every night.

Hotel Rex – This classy joint has a creative feel courtesy of the much praised unique hotel chain ‘Joie de Vivre.’ With décor based on Art and Literary salons of historic San Francisco you’ll expect to find leather bound classic literature, traditional art and club-lounge style furniture. A very cool hotel to stay in San Francisco.

Travelling across Caribbean Sea and around Hawaii, I have come to some of the best hotels in the world such as Decameron hotels in San Andres and Providencia, One and Only Ocean Club in Bahamas, or Westin Ilikai in Hawaii.

Tennis players and yachtsman have a natural affinity for the 30-floor, 800-room Westin Ilikai hotel in Hawaii, on the western city end of the Waikiki. Its seven courts and able staff of professionals comprise the only tennis complex on the beach. A few steps away are the marina where most of the big sail on Oahu ties up. The open area at lobby level has a swimming pool, fountains and terraces, a popular meeting place, particularly at sundown when Hawaiian trio performs. Rooms at the Westin Ilikai are comfortable, well furnished and spacious, more like large studio apartments than hotel rooms. A glass elevator presents a beautiful panorama of the Pacific as it whisks passengers to the hotel restaurants, The Champeaux’s or Annabelle’s.

One of the best restaurants in the area, The Champeaux’s, has a stunning 30th floor view. The specialty of Chef Harrison Ramey includes lychee flambé, warm duck salad, and strawberries renaissance.

Nearby the Lahain Kaanapali and Pacific Rail Road, the Sugar Cane Train, takes passengers on a 12-mile round trip through Hawaiian history. During the run from Kaanapali and back the conductor tells of the importance of sugar cane to the islands and how it was transported by train to the mill, sometimes accompanying himself on a ukulele. It’s all a reconstruction, but loads of fun taking the train over the 415-foot Hahakea Trestle. The trip can be combined with a Lahaina tour, lunch, and even a glass-bottom boat ride.

Every winter humpback whales come from the Gulf of Alaska to mate and give birth to their young. From 500 to 800 of these leviathans make for the shallow are bounded by Maui, Lanai, and Molokai. Humpback whales range from 40 to 500 feet in length and weigh about 30 tones.

The first European to discover the Amazon was the Spanish explorer Vicente Yafiez Pinzon, onetime captain aboard Christopher Columbus’s ship the Nina. Cruising the coast of Brazil in 1500, he sailed into at least one of the mouths of the Amazon and realized that he had found a very large river indeed.

But real exploration did not begin until 1541, when Francisco de Orellana, another Spaniard, set out on an adventure down one of the Amazon’s tributaries in eastern Ecuador. Drifting with the current into ever-larger streams, Orellana and his band of soldiers reached the Atlantic nearly a year and a half later. Along the way they battled with tall, fierce female warriors whom Orellana likened to the Amazons, the legendary female warriors of Greek mythology. And so the river got its name.

The name is appropriate, for the Amazon is a giant among rivers. Only the Nile is longer—and only slightly longer. But the Amazon’s total length (almost 4,000 miles, or 6,500 kilometers) is still impressive: it is equal to about 1% times the distance from San Francisco to New York.

Its drainage basin is the largest of any river in the world. Fed by more than 1,000 tributaries, including 7 that are themselves more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) long, it drains more than half of Brazil as well as parts of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela. Its total drainage basin of some 2722,000 square miles (7,050,000 square kilometers) encompasses about one-third of South America—an area more than 10 times the size of Texas and nearly as large as the entire contiguous United States.

Over most of this vast region the climate is very warm and humid. Rain falls about 200 days each year, and total rainfall exceeds 80 inches (2,030 millimeters) per year. One result of so much rain is that Amazonia, as the central region is known, is covered by the largest tropical rain forest in the world. Another result is that the river carries by far the largest volume of water of any river in the world. On the average, some 28 billion gallons (105 trillion liters) per minute flow into the sea—about 10 times the flow of the Mississippi. The discharge is so great, in fact, that it noticeably dilutes the salinity of the Atlantic’s waters for more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) offshore.

The great river begins as hundreds of tiny streams high in the Peruvian Andes, some of them within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of the Pacific Ocean. Rushing down the slopes, stream after stream continues to merge to form larger and larger rivers. Near Iquitos in eastern Peru, the northeastward-flowing Ucayali and the Rio Maranon, the two main headwaters of the Amazon, unite to form a truly major river. Iquitos is the point farthest upstream that shallow-draft freighters and passenger vessels can penetrate (deepwater ships can reach as far as Manaus in central Brazil).

Beyond Iquitos the river changes both its character and course. Turning abruptly eastward, it more or less parallels the equator as it meanders over lowland plains. At Iquitos the river also changes its name. Locally it is known as the Solimnes from Iquitos to its junction with the Rio Negro at Manaus and is called the Amazon only from Manaus to the sea.

Crossing the low interior basin of Brazil, the Amazon flows along a very gentle gradient—only about 11/4 inches per mile (20 millimeters per kilometer). Sluggish now, it branches into numerous secondary channels, which are separated by very densely forested islands. Beyond the riverbanks are broad, swampy floodplains dotted with lakes (varzeas) and covered with lush, periodically flooded forests.

All along the course of the river there are seasonal floods. Tributaries flowing from the south tend to reach their highest stages from February to April, while those coming from the north tend to crest in June or July.

On its long journey to the sea the Amazon also varies in color. Some of its tributaries are called Rios Blancos (white rivers), though their color is oftener a murky yellow or tan. Others are known as Rios Negros (black rivers), their waters dark but crystal clear. The white rivers rise in the Andes, and their turbidity results from the heavy loads of mud and silt they carry. The black rivers, in contrast, rise in areas of ancient basement rock where little sediment remains to be washed away; only dissolved organic matter stains their clarity.

Clearly the most dramatic union of a black-water stream and a white one occurs at Manaus, where the Rio Negro flows into the muddy Amazon. For many miles the black and white waters flow side by side in separate, clearly defined streams before they finally intermingle.

About 600 miles, (965 kilometers) from the coast, at Obidos, the ocean begins to affect the river. Tides are able to penetrate this far upstream because of the extremely gentle slope of the land.

Beyond the point where the Xingu flows in from the south, the Amazon splits up into a maze of channels clogged by larger and larger islands. (Maray), the biggest island in the delta, is about the size of Vermont and New Hampshire combined.) Finally, beyond its several mouths, the river merges with the sea.

Although there are a few sizable cities along the river’s banks and scattered settlements inland, Amazonia is largely uninhabited. Here and there plantations have been cleared in the jungles, and natives ply the streams in search of latex and Brazil nuts. But mostly the great green luxuriant rain forest is still pristine wilderness, one of the few large areas left on earth where nature’s creation remains more or less unspoiled and intact.

Leslie writes for travel sites and is planning on the West Highland Way.

Once a small fishing town is now the center of attention for over 250,000 tourists who come down in summer to have a great time and enjoy the beautiful sceneries and the weather. Famously known for its night life and a huge list of night club really is a tourist attraction for people of all ages. Ayia Napa is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world which are good enough to take you by storm. A well suited family vacation resort is located very close by and is close to all the amenities. A main attraction for families is the safari around the whole place where you can rent a open top jeep, scour the land and experience the amazing waterfalls, the mountain drives and the breath taking sceneries are really something that will leave a mark on your memory when you go for holidays to ayia napa. For the ladies who are shopaholics, Ayia napa boasts designer brands and fashions for locals and holiday makers altogether. You can get a wide range of designer watches, sunglasses, clothing, jewellery and cameras for a bargain, there is a price discount of about 30 percent on items as compared to other countries which is another reason why ayia napa is very famous amongst the ladies. All the major credit cards are accepted so even if you run out of money and still wish to shop, you can easily avail the great bargains. Leather goods of ayia napa are very famous and of superior quality.

If you are a vacationer who really enjoys the fine cuisines, then ayia napa will definitely not disappoint you because they have a wide variety of cuisines from all over the world, from fast food items, French cuisines to Chinese dishes, you are sure to find the cuisine of your choice just around the corner. The famous dishes of ayia napa include Cypriot Meze which is a combination of about 20 to 30 island dishes and the aphelia which is pork and redwine. A major plus point of ayia napa is the night life, from clubs, bars and discos open well into the early hours of morning, you are sure to have a great time and enjoy yourself whether you love to dance or just want to grab a couple of drinks. Most resorts have their own nights planned which have some of the best disc jockeys or local bands to entertain their guests. Travelling everywhere in the world might not be of as much pleasure as the experience you will have in ayia Napa.

When going to Egypt, a visit to the Pyramids in the Cairo is an absolute must. Even the most jaded traveler will be unable to do anything but gap in awe at the sheer size and technical ingenuity of these monuments. Of course, the site is a touristic mayhem and those traveling independently will be seriously tested by all the challenges involved in getting there on their own – but perhaps no other place in the world is worth all the hassle involved.

Thus, when you do finally make it on the site and if the Great Pyramid of Giza is open for visiting, don’t miss the chance to go inside. A separate ticket than the one for general admission is required to get in. It is currently sold for 100 pounds (20 dollars) at the ticket offices that can be found at either of two entrances. There is the main entrance, which is obvious, and the backside entrance which is located in an alley of camel stables. Don’t buy a ticket from anywhere but those two places as there are some fakes going around.

Another crucial detail in regards to going inside the pyramid: one needs to be in good shape. The stairs are steep and difficult. The air is thin, the temperature is very humid and hot and the passages can easily make someone feel claustrophobic. Some passages also require people to bend considerably or walk on their knees. I saw a few people out of breath in there.

Know that you cannot bring a camera inside and if you are uncomfortable to leave you camera and possibly your bag with the guard at the entrance, arrange the visit so you can leave these items with someone you trust while you climb up to the King’s chamber. When you get up there, take your time to appreciate the unique feeling of the chamber. It is barren and there is nothing spectacular about it, unless you take a moment to feel and ponder on the immensity of the giant blocks surrounding you. Also pay attention to the way the sound echoes, the chamber creates astonishing acoustics!

A canal cruise is surely the best way to see the wonderful city of Amsterdam. My wife and I had decided on a holiday as a special treat for my fiftieth birthday and Amsterdam city breaks had always been something that we wanted to try. As the canal boat sailed through this historic city, we were sure we had made the right choice.

We had a few items on our itinerary that we definitely wanted to see. My wife is a great art lover so the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum were obviously priorities. The Anne Frank Huis was also somewhere I wanted visit and if we could squeeze it in, I quite fancied the Heineken Brewery.

We ventured to the Van Gogh Museum on our first day. It is located in Amsterdam’s museum quarter and not only houses one of the finest collections of art in Europe, but is also an extremely beautiful and stylish modern buidling. The airy open plan layout is very well suited to the paintings and shows them off at their best.

The Rijksmuseum was also a treat, although to fully do it justice, a whole afternoon or even a day would be required.

After the museums, we spent a pleasant couple of hours drinkiung beer in an open air bar on Leiseplein, one of Amsterdam’s main tourist hot spots. It’s a nice place to sit on a sunny afternoon and in the evening it is full of street entertainers and artists plying their trade.

We never made it to the Anne Frank Huis as the queue was far too long. So please be aware – if visiting this attraction, be sure to get there early.

In our time there, I think my best memory is simply sipping a beer outside a nice brown cafe overlooking a canal. Sheer bliss.

Even if the dreamy scenario of an overwater bungalow and fishes right at your doorstep, which are the trademarks of Maldives holidays, are enticing to a lot of people, not all travelers will feel that staying at a luxurious resort in a private island is the right holiday for them. Some people do prefer to have cheap holidays as a matter of choice. Fortunately for budget travelers with an adventurous streak, there are a lot of beaches all over the world to choose from. Here are three recommended beaches found in Central and South America.

With a 16 mile stretch of white sand, Placencia Beach is one of the must go beaches in the country of Belize. Located at the Stan Creek District, it provides a spacious venue for beach goers to indulge in swimming, engaging in water activities, and working on that perfect tan. There are also other activities nearby in case one wants to take a break from beach activities. For example, half day kayak tours in the Monkey River are offered. Howler monkeys, crocodiles, and manatees are often spotted during these tours.

In Mexico, Cancun has always been a top choice among those who want to have a holiday in this country. However, there are other alternatives to the crowded Cancun. One such beach is found in the town of Tulum. This town has an amazing beach with white sand and clear waters but at more affordable prices. The average price for a night’s stay in a room in the beachside resorts is at the $50 to $70 price range. The restaurants offer meals at reasonable prices as well. Aside from the beach activities, another outdoor activity for visitors is to take a walk through the Mayan ruin which the town is also famous for.

Those who prefer to try out the beaches in Brazil may want to head off to Tinhare Island in Bahia. The island also goes by the name of Morro de Sao Paulo. There are four beaches found in the island that are simply named First Beach, Second Beach, Third Beach, and Fourth Beach. Each of the beaches have their own distinct atmosphere and the corresponding type of tourist. For example, surfers often flock to First Beach while party goers are often found populating Second Beach due to the luau and dance parties often held here. The quieter and more laid back beaches are the Third and Fourth Beach, which make them ideal to families and honeymooners.

As the beaches in the Maldives have their exclusive charm, so do the beaches found in Central and South America. The Latin American culture, coupled with the natural beauty of the beaches found in the coasts of this part of the world makes cheap holidays here very appealing.
